empowerment

  • Today marks the official first day of spring in the northern hemisphere. Here in Philly, we’ve had a few weeks of warmer weather already and the first-to-bloom flowers are out in full force. I love how they pop up out of last year’s leaves decaying on the forest floor.

‘Tis the season for spring cleaning. I’m not feeling the usual pull to wash the windows and sweep the baseboards. The green juices and cleansing herbs aren’t appealing to me this year either.

What I’m really sensing is an urge to clean up my calendar. Where am I wasting time? Frittering it away in 3 minute chunks of absentminded scrolling? How do I spend my precious energy in ways that aren’t fulfilling or are downright detracting from my life-force?

I’m interested in cleaning up my energetic output and that requires a brutally honest assessment of impulsive and unconscious behaviors. It helps to know what I truly value and how that time might be better spent. I have a date with my journal to explore how I’m investing my priceless attention and how to maximize my returns.

Side note: we’re entering the light half of the year. Many are cheering the longer days, higher temps, and upcoming summer season. For all the weirdos like myself who prefer the darker, colder months, it helps me to remember that I’ll enjoy the fall so much more after having experienced the heat and humidity of August.

I’m attempting to adapt more gracefully to the rhythms of nature and it all starts with my attitude. So, dear summer, I know you’re coming and I’m going to do my very best to make friends with you this year.

Wherever you are, in the world or in your preferences, I wish you a peaceful transition on this day that is such a powerful turning point.

    Happy equinox!

  • There are loads of reasons you might be experiencing, or teetering on the edge of, burnout.

Doing all the things without support from society or family or the workplace is a common source of depleted energy.

Chronic stress is exhausting. And insanely epidemic.

Avoiding our emotions takes an extraordinary bite out of our reserves. Consistent worry and attempts at controlling life or other people are heavy drains on our batteries.

Feeling like you’re lost and alone in a hostile world is another factor that saps energy.

These issues slowly (or not so slowly!) drain life-force over time. If it’s not replaced on a steady basis, the body, mind and spirit suffer.

I think of my life-force energy much the way I do money. I want to have more deposits than withdrawals. I want to spend wisely and curtail all waste. I want to invest in ventures that bring the greatest returns.

It sounds simple, right? Maybe. That doesn’t mean it’s easy. Some obligations are non-negotiable, no matter how draining they are. Some phases of life require a hefty expenditure of energy with delayed benefits. Sometimes the perfect storm hits us out of the blue and catches us off guard.

Don’t get me started on menopause!

Many of the remedies our society points to are not helpful at all. Scrolling on social media, alcohol, binge watching trashy TV and comfort foods might bring momentary relief but don’t actually nourish us in any meaningful way.

If the problem is a deficiency of life-force energy, then deposits of the same are the only true medicine. These can come from time spent in nature, connection with uplifting people, joyful movement, creative projects, and pleasure.

Sadly, these activities might not seem accessible from the vantage point of burnout.

Which is where Reiki comes in. Reiki is a holistic healing technique that bathes the recipient in spiritually guided life-force energy and stimulates the body’s innate abilities to restore itself. It’s the easiest, safest, most powerful strategy I’ve discovered in over 25 years of exploring the journey of healing.

If you need to start making some deposits in your life-force account, look no further. To make things even easier, you have the choice of staying in your fuzzy pajamas and receiving an infusion without leaving home. Or coming to my office in your fuzzy pajamas. 🙂 No judgment here.

While I provide sessions year round, for the month of January, I’m offering 24% off all in-person and remote Reiki treatments. Book by the 31st to take advantage of this deal and get started on the road to recovery.

    Reiki for Burnout

There are loads of reasons you might be experiencing, or teetering on the edge of, burnout.…

  • As we come to the end of 2024, I’m hearing a lot of talk about discovering one’s purpose for the new year.

This is causing a lot of stress to some people.

Just so you know, if you don’t have a clear directive as to what your life purpose is, you’re not alone. I don’t know many people who do! My nephew wants to be an astronaut and for several years, his sister wanted to be a dog. Most of the adults I know are much less certain.

If you’re wondering what your purpose in this lifetime is, I have a suggestion. Think about how you want to feel as you go throughout your days rather than a particular role you think you should play. In my eyes, purpose is much less about a career, and more about the qualities we bring to our everyday activities.

You don’t need to figure out if you’re supposed to be a doctor or rockstar or teacher or… a dog. ❤ But it might be nice to make a commitment to being patient or compassionate, perhaps a good listener, nonjudgmental or an all-around kind person.

My current purpose seems to be standing for self-empowerment, particularly regarding holistic wellness. Being a massage and Reiki provider is indeed part of that, but only just a part.

When I’m off the clock, it’s still my intention to take inspired action and cultivate the most physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and energetic health available to me and to model that to others. It’s a large part of my lifestyle and conversations as well as my business. I endeavor to embody the essence of self-empowerment and wellness, regardless of what I’m doing.

So rather than stressing out and taking all the online quizzes about what you want to be when you grow up, you might find some relief in thinking about how you’d like to feel today and taking a step in that direction.

Online Reiki 1 Certification Coming in January!

Who wants to experience more wellness, wholeness, creativity, peace, love, and joy in the new year?…

  • Last night in my Reiki Master Teacher certification class, we had a lively discussion about how to offer Reiki to the upcoming election. This was the final class in a 6 month program that just happened to coincide with unprecedented global turmoil. These students have had an education in how to manage stress and build resilience that I never could have offered without the challenges presented by such intense external circumstances.

Reiki people have a great advantage during crises as we have access to healing energy at our very fingertips. Yet we were all feeling some level of distress, dismay, and overwhelm about the climate in this country that recently reached an all-new low. I wanted to explore how we could take action and restore a sense of empowerment and peace internally and expand it outwards.

So what does “Reiki’ing the election” do? For starters, it’s not a substitute for voting or any other civil responsibilities you are inspired to take. It’s also not a guarantee that your candidate will win. Reiki works for the highest good of ALL, and while those of us present last night were in agreement of what we thought that should be, we really don’t have access to the full picture.

As with using Reiki for any goal, we came to an agreement that we needed to release attachment to the outcome.

What constitutes the highest good of all is information beyond our clearance level.

    That’s a job for a higher power.

Our conversation led us to a list of core principles that we chose to focus on; the contribution we wish to make to the foundation of the country’s future. It was an animated conversation and amazing to watch as they became inspired to participate politically, but on an entirely different plane.

These are the ingredients we added to our Future of America Soup. We did a short practice, intending for these ideals to become inviolate for all inhabitants of this country. The image that came to me was a crop duster, spraying the essence of these ideals from coast to coast.

    Truth

    Justice

    Peace

    Courage

    Awakening

    Unity

    Integrity

    Liberty

Please won’t you join us? Reiki is fueled by intention. If you haven’t been trained in Reiki, you can still participate by visualizing the future you’d like to experience and sending loving energy from your heart. If you have been attuned, simply add your Reiki intention and any symbols you have.

You don’t need to choose between involvement and serenity. This is one way you can have both. And incredible soul medicine as well!

    Reiki for the Election

Last night in my Reiki Master Teacher certification class, we had a lively discussion about how…

  • Many of my clients and students tell me they are struggling to remain rooted in this world, aware of the events of 2020, connected to the well of peace within, and aligned with their soul’s calling. It is indeed a balancing act to keep our eyes and ears open and participate in a society that seems to grow more chaotic by the day without allowing ourselves to get swept up by despair and anxiety.

Some spiritually minded folks prefer to keep their attention focused inward, ignoring the struggle that so many are facing these days. That is absolutely an option for those of us who are privileged enough to not be directly affected by the state of the world. There are plenty of roles to be played during this time of great transformation.

If you’d prefer a more active role, perhaps with boots on the ground, as a participant in the crucial discussions happening online, or as a leader, teacher, or facilitator of some sort, you need not sacrifice your health and well-being to do so.

I’m observing an awakening of many activists who wish to lend a hand in recreating, in their own ways, the world we live in. People are stretching beyond their comfort zones to help their communities and beyond, and it is heartwarming to behold. I applaud those who are stepping up to engage in the shaping of our global future. I also recognize the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual fatigue that they risk without adequate care for themselves.

Reiki is the easiest, safest, and most powerful tool I am aware of to keep our tanks full so that we can return again and again to our missions. Filling ourselves with life-force energy and releasing unnecessary stress boosts our immune systems and our connection to intuition, two important factors for remaining able to continue on our paths with clarity and vitality. Even the greatest warriors need occasional respite. Taking the time to tend to our needs allows us to return to the arena, bringing our wisdom, power, and stamina.

It requires effort, but it is possible to have an embodied, visceral connection to the spiritual world, an eye toward the future we hope to build, and a sense of purpose integrated with inner peace. At times, staying involved without becoming a martyr will feel like a complicated dance. Receiving frequent Reiki infusions along can be both the anchor that allows you to remain grounded and the raft that keeps you afloat.

Anyone can learn Reiki in a short amount of time, without any prior knowledge or skill. These days there are plenty of online classes to choose from if you don’t have a teacher in your area. Once initiated into this healing modality, you forever have access to it.

I recommend a daily self-treatment of flooding oneself with spiritually guided life-force energy as a preventative approach, but it’s also easy to activate Reiki in times of stress, crisis, or pain. I call this technique Reiki on the fly and it is tremendously helpful. It’s also comforting to know that access to this infinite source of healing is at the fingertips whenever needed.

If the thought of adding one more thing, no matter how brilliant, to your daily to-do list causes you to cringe, you can benefit from seeking out a practitioner to support you. Depending on where you live, you might be able to receive a hands-on treatment. If not, there’s another, equally potent option. Long-distance Reiki is a tried and true service that allows a recipient to relax wherever they are and absorb the healing energy transferred from afar.

Reiki really is exactly the medicine we need during these challenging times. It gives us the extra oomph required to pursue our calling without a need to sacrifice our well-being. It’s easy and safe to use and is always available. Reiki provides us with the best possible chance of enjoying optimal health while remaining engaged with the world. You need not be forced to choose one or the other; Reiki can help you have both.

    Reiki Empowerment

Many of my clients and students tell me they are struggling to remain rooted in this…

  • I’ve been rereading Louise Hay’s masterpiece You Can Heal Your Life. Again. This is the book that has changed my perspective, and subsequently my life, more than any other. She teaches that our thoughts create our reality, that we are the only thinkers in our heads, and therefore we have the ultimate power to heal our lives by choosing new thoughts. I’ve seen evidence of this again and again in my own life as I uncover and surrender beliefs that no longer serve me.

Taking this one step further, it is evident to me that we can only heal ourselves. No matter what therapist we visit or  which treatment we recieve, the true responsibility rests on our own shoulders for shifting our thoughts. No one else can heal us. This realization occassionally causes me to despair; what is the point of devoting my career to the healing arts if I’m unable to actually heal anyone? Am I deluding myself about the transformative power of Reiki?

The truth is that as much as I’d love to heal people, their own free will makes it impossible for healing to be imposed from the outside. Rather than feeling discouraged about this fact, I’ve come to rejoice in the freedom it reveals. I’m not responsible for anyone else’s healing. Just my own. Whew! However, I am indeed able to support them in the process. Flooding one’s being with universal life-force energy (ki) not only encourages relaxation, but also a deep sense of safety and belonging. From this space it is much easier to become aligned with our true nature and uncover false beliefs that hold us down. Once we become aware of our disempowering thoughts we can begin to replace them.

Reiki is like windshield wipers on a drizzly day. They help clear off the muck that gets stuck to the wet glass and make it easier for us to see where we’re going. We can then decide if we want to carry on straight ahead or need to make course corrections. Reiki is not driving the car; our thoughts continue to do that. But when we can see more clearly, it’s a whole lot easier to get where we want to go.

The Power is in the Thinking

I’ve been rereading Louise Hay’s masterpiece You Can Heal Your Life. Again. This is the book…

  • Recently a client asked me if her hair was interfering with her chi flow. We were doing a Reiki/massage combo and she had tied it up, Sumo style, to keep it out of the oil. She was worried that the clump of hair might block the flow of chi (life force energy, same as the “ki” in Reiki) from entering her crown chakra. I assured her that chi is powerful enough to navigate through.

I could almost see the wheels spinning as she processed this information. A few beats later, she asked A Really Big Question. How could our chakras ever get blocked if chi is so powerful? I generally don’t like to converse during a treatment because it keeps the client from sinking into deep relaxation. However, this concept is so important to deep, lasting healing that I was grateful for the opportunity to respond.

Much has been written on this topic. I could go on and on about it for days, but it’s really quite simple. We have free will. We have been given the power to choose our thoughts, and sometimes we choose thoughts that are out of alignment with our True Nature. It’s our thinking that blocks the chi; when we choose new thoughts, loving thoughts, the chi will begin to resume its natural flow.

We were created as sacred beings; innocent, free, peaceful, joyful, loving, and loved. This is our True Nature. Thoughts of fear, worry, jealousy, anger, resentment, guilt, and shame disrupt the flow of life-force energy in and around our bodies. We might think that we’re feeling upset because of unacceptable circumstances, but really we’re upset because our thoughts are causing us to feel separate from our True Nature. The willingness to surrender misaligned thinking is the remedy to restoring chi flow.

She sighed deeply and agreed that this really struck home. Accepting this truth is quite empowering as we then have the opportunity to create change. It’s also a big responsibility as we are no longer able to point fingers and blame other people, events, or situations as the source of our blockages.  To me, it’s just like any other law of nature, such as gravity. It just is; I might as well learn to work with it rather than waste my time and energy struggling against it.
